What is ACT?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is a modern process-based therapy (PBT) often referred to as the “third wave of CBT”. Traditional CBT aims to reduce unwanted thoughts, emotions and behaviors by challenging the accuracy of these internal experiences and developing a more adaptive thinking process. Traditional CBT treatment packages are complex and diagnosis specific, where process-based CBT such as ACT treats multiple diagnoses at the same time. ACT accomplishes by incorporating mindfulness skills and a focus on values-based living.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the act of observing thoughts, emotions and physiological sensations, in the present moment, without avoidance or judgement. ACT utilizes easy to learn mindfulness skills such as “cognitive defusion” and “present moment awareness” to better manage difficult daily situations.
Values
Values are defined as a desired life direction which adds to a meaningful life. When identifying values, the individual clarifies areas which they find to be meaningful and take steps that help move them towards those values. Values work is an innovative means of getting unstuck from avoidance and moving towards what truly matters.
